Did you know that we spend on average 1/3 of our time in bed every day? Finding and taking care of a homey bed and cozy bed linen is therefore no easy task, especially when seasons change. With spring around the corner, prepare yourself to fight against damp pillowcases and bed sheets. But do not worry, Blanc des Vosges and its bed linen expert are here to share their tips and secrets to keep bed linen fresh all year round.
While we sleep, we tend to sweat, dead skin cells shed, accumulated dirt in our hair is absorbed by our pillowcases making the perfect home for bacteria to foster on. Unwashed bed sheets can also lead to allergies, asthma, or stuffy nose as they attract a lot of dust mites. Washing them regularly is extremely important.
Do you smell an unusual scent after washing your bed linen? Clothes worn for a day contain up to 4 million bacteria. Can you imagine how much is on one duvet cover? Therefore, keep the humidity as low as possibility to inhibit the speed of allergen reproduction. You can invest in a dehumidifier but there are also natural ways to dehumidify a room such as using rock salt or baking soda.
Last but not least, even though bed sheets and pillowcases are what touches our bodies, pillows, duvets or quilts also need extra attention. Do not hesitate to vacuum clean your mattress every now and then as it is relatively simple and not time-consuming. You can even flip it around as seasons change if it has summer or winter sides.
Advice from the team at Blanc des Vosges on making your sleeping spot a stylish haven.
#1 Opt for cosy, harmonising colours
The choice of elegant and comfortable bed linen is key, as it will set the tone of the whole bedroom. Choose something that matches the colour of your curtains to help create a harmonised colour tone in the room. It’s also a good idea to match the colours of your bed linen and your throw, if you have one. Choose two sets of bed linen so you can change it weekly to enjoy different French designs. Adding cushions is another must – though not too many, or it will make the room look too busy (and it will be too much work moving them around every morning and night!).
#2 Make it feel like a home away from home
If you have a console, add a few family pictures; at this time, expats in particular will be feeling the separation from “back home”, and the strain on relationships. Having some pictures to remind us of what's important is key.
#3 Let there be light
Lighting is essential; you want a warm yellow colour coming from the ceiling, and table lamps on the bedsides so you can enjoy reading in bed. The choice of ceiling light is also very important, as this is the last thing you’ll see when you close your eyes, and the first one in the morning! Trends are currently for airy designs in light colours, preferably wood and fabric.
#4 Stay organised
As the saying goes, an organised home means an organised mind. For worry-free nights, avoid over-decorating your bedroom. On the wall, we recommend just a few art pieces – frames, craft creations, a few hooks to hold your favourite hats. Avoid a storage tray where you empty your pockets every night, as this will accumulate. Instead, use a few small boxes to store jewellery, or lacquer boxes with compartments.
#5 Take your cues from local traditions
Since the bed is the key element of the bedroom, it needs to be facing the window for feng shui purposes, with the headboard against a wall. You need space to walk around it, and it also has to be close to a window to allow the surrounding air to be renewed daily.
About Blanc Des Vosges
Since 1843, this family-owned and family-run business has been producing top-of-the-range bed linen in Gérardmer, France. Today, it’s run by fourth generation Jean-François Birac, with the Blanc Des Vosges team aiming to handle each thread, stitch and fold with the same level of passion and precision as the forefathers before them. The brand’s traditional and contemporary designs are mastered with hand-made finishes and details, such as ladder stitch, picot, piping and applied ribbons and braids. In addition to a permanent range of over 50 colours in various qualities, Blanc des Vosges launches two new collections annually, with over 30 new designs in the year.
There is usually quite a lot of product information on the back of the packaging. However, do you understand what they mean and what numbers or descriptions are indications of a good bed linen? Here are the most common two things that you can refer to or learn about when choosing your perfect bed linen.
1. Thread count
It refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of a fabric. The higher the thread count, the finer and softer the fabric will be. So you may wonder - the higher the thread count, the better the quality of the bed linen? This is however a wrong interpretation. While having more thread count, especially under the humid weather, you will easily feel hot, sultry and cramped because of the high density of threads per square inch. A good range is between 200 and 400. Below 200 it will be rough and not soft and above 400 means the fibres are most likely woven and therefore heavy.
2. Material
Cotton is the most common component used in bedding. Blanc des Vosges is using combed cotton, which is one of the best materials because it is a softer and more durable version of the common cotton. It’s made by further treating the cotton, and this extra work brings extra quality . With three cotton materials to choose from, each of them have their own advantages.
a. Jacquard
These fabrics in 100% combed cotton have a higher thread count, which brings a clear silky aspect to the bed linen. They allow the sheets to be printed with different patterns that could reflect the light in different ways.

b. Percale
This tightly woven quality of cloth is the best option in summer time because of its highly breathable texture. Being soft, cozy and durable for years of use, percale is a bedroom standard that is suitable for repeated use and washing, and also provides a range of luxurious and premium designs.

c. Sateen
These fabrics are silky and smooth to the touch, but a little thicker and more tightly woven than percale. While percale may be the perfect sheet for the summer months, sateen is definitely a warmer fabric choice that is perfect for snuggling when the temperatures outside drop. It usually has a high sheen that creates a luxurious and romantic sense to your room.

How often do you wash your bed sheets? We all love a cozy bedroom but we bid no one loves gritty bedding. Let us share with you a terrible dirty truth - based on a survey of 2,000 people in the UK, conducted by Hammonds Furniture, 30% of the participants only put their sheets in the wash once a year or less! Let’s think, when did you last wash your bed sheets? Are you sure you are lying in a comfortable bed in a clean condition now?
]]>Washing the bed linen should be the top 3 things on your housework list. Bed linen is very easy to accumulate a lot of invisible dirt, for example body oil, sweats, and dead cells, which become an awesome paradise for dust mites to incubate. Sleeping with dust mites sounds very disgusting right? Another thing that ladies should consider is the great possibility of having various skin problems such as allergies, acne, or infections as you are always in super close contact with the dirty bedding products especially the pillow case. The best practice is to wash the bed linen once a week.
